How We Charge

Charging by the hour, letter, telephone call or meeting is impractical, outdated and does not fit with modern business practice in the slightest. Unless specifically requested by a client to do so, we never charge hourly rates.  We know that businesses need surety in terms of their outgoings in order to forecast accurately and plan for the future. Having concerns about the cost of picking up the phone to your legal adviser will usually mean that legal advice is not taken which can lead to expensive consequences further down the line.


We offer transparent billing options in the form of a fixed fee for a specific project or a retainer fee for legal advice provided on an on-going basis. Subject to the client’s requirements remaining materially the same, these prices do not increase giving our clients the confidence to contact us for advice, no matter how insignificant they believe it may be. Having the ability to obtain legal advice at a fixed price adds value to our clients’ businesses, allows us to become accustomed to their commercial and internal dealings and avoids costly errors being made. Essentially, we are able to form part of our clients’ teams.

Fixed Fee

We are more than happy to agree fixed prices for projects at the outset. The fixed fee will  remain just that unless there is a significant change in the type of work involved, timescales or parameters of the project. Any increases in fixed fees are always discussed and agreed with clients prior to them being implemented. We also give clients the option to spread the cost of the fixed fee across a number of months to facilitate cash flow.


The fixed fee structure gives absolute transparency to the cost of our legal work and enables clients to budget a project efficiently at the outset. If a project is transactional in nature, we will also consider contingent fees on a matter-by-matter basis.

Retainer Services

Greenaway Scott offers an “In-House”- style legal retainer service to our clients on a monthly fixed fee basis.

A member of the Greenaway Scott team is able to review contracts, attend meetings and conference calls and become familiar with the client’s team.

Our team is available “on demand” each month to provide legal support as and when needed. The flexibility of this structure provides our clients with the ability to plan for a fixed spend on legal costs, spread over a period of time.

The cost of the retainer would not fluctuate depending on the amount of work completed (subject to a fair use policy). Our clients find this model to be particularly effective as it enables and encourages open communication and allows us to understand what is commercially important to our clients. 


Our team can also work “in-house” and attend and work from the offices of our clients. Our clients find by utilising this structure that Greenaway Scott is able to add value to their business as our team becomes familiar with the commercial rationale driving their company.
